Recently, I got request to like a page “Dahal Samaj.” The other day, a popular social media personality had created a page “Banjade Samaj” or something like and asking all Banjade to come together. I know one organisation in real, called “Dhungana Samaj.” They regularly meet, organise picnic and stuffs, do things for each others in need.
This all may look, normal, but if you deeply analyse nature of such groups and consequences, you could not agree more with me for saying that this is the most weird and absurd thing one can think of — Groupism based on last name. Forming a group based on profession, understandable. Forming a group based on hobbies and passions, understandable. Okay fine, forming a group even based on ethnicity is understandable but FORMING A GROUP BASED ON LAST NAME!! That’s totally weird but it happens, mostly in Chettri/Bahun community.
I often hear this cliche when a person meet someone with same last name “Oh ho, afnai manche hunu hudarahecha” or straightly calls “Bandhu.” Their conversation goes like “Kata ko Dahal parnu bhayo” “Where you guys came from?” I don’t know how common this is in other communities but it is very common practice in Chettri/Bahun community, especially older generation (Hope, new generation are different.) Chettri/Bahun community practices creating groups and subgroups. The practice dates back to veda era. That’s how “Jaat,” “ghotra,” “thar,” came into existence and the cultural tendency is still observable.
Now, it will beg an obvious question? What’s wrong with that.
Imagine this way, if a person calls someone “Bandhu” for sharing the same last name or says something like “Afnai manche parnu bhayechha,” gets cosy and tends to be bit extra nice, what will happen when he becomes PM or secretary or ambassador? Also, if president of “Dahal Samaj” becomes a secretary or minister, how easy will it be for him to not appoint someone from “Dahal Samaj” and rather go per meritocracy. It’s a fundamental nature of human to prefer someone familiar over stranger. So, back to the question “What’s wrong with that?” Answer is, you end up uplifting a group/subgroup that you are affiliated with – birth of NEPOTISM. To make things worse, you pick a person based on freaking LAST NAME and CASTE.
This practice has been going on from centuries. Nepalese communities culturally are schooled to prefer or favour someone from own community, consciously and subconsciously. However, since Chettri/Bahun has been a ruling class from two centuries, the above-mentioned psychological tendency has resultant a system that is filled by particular caste and subcaste. Thus, Chettri/Bahun in politics, in governance, in police and administration, almost everywhere that is under the influence of ruling class.
I must say, you are living in state of denial if you think that the current structure of Nepal government and everything related to it is not out of Bahun/Chetri nepotism culture. Just ask yourself when you come across a FB profile that holds same last name of yours, how you feel? Realise the sparks of “Oh merai last nama wala rahecha,” that brotherhood/sisterhood feeling?! We all are bound to lean towards specific group that we are affiliated with, if we let nature to guide us. There is where strong ethics and moralities and righteousness should come into play. In one word MERITOCRACY.
No one is born bad, born racist, born communalist. It’s the culture that they get exposed to, turns them into an asshole that go gaga about community, form a group based on last name and caste and creed, brag about religion, that they themselves don’t know that they are becoming an asshole who will ruin the system in the future. It’s a human nature to form a group. Right and wrong group is defined by the basis on which a group is formed. What has been going wrong in this country is, we form a group based on last name and caste, and we turn the group into vote banks, and use the group networks to uplift each other. That’s how we ended up creating a current state structure.
How can we STOP this?
You can’t change the system by keeping alive the practice and culture that gave birth to the system in first place. Problem is not with the last name, not with the caste, or group. Problem is the CULTURE, problem with the SCHOOLING. Problem is with the VALUES that these groups carry. Twisting and reforming those CULTURE, SCHOOLING, VALUES, will bring the change.

What’s Special Today: November 10
Historically native to the Indian states of Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand and the southern part of Nepal, Chhath is one of those festivals that transcends the caste system that exists in the society. According to the Hindu calendar, it is celebrated on the sixth day of the lunar month of Kartik. The Chhath Puja is a 4-day long ritual specially offered to the solar deity, Surya, to show thankfulness for good health, good life and to request the granting of some certain wishes.
Day 1: On the first day, the devotees after bathing clean their house and eat the food that is offered to the god to protect the mind from the vengeful tendency.
Day 2: On the second day, the devotees are not allowed to drink even a single drop of water but, in the evening, they eat kheer made up of jaggery, fruits.
Day 3: The evening of the third day which is also known as sandhya ‘arghya’ day where a bamboo basket is decorated with various puja materials, fruits, thekuwa, and laddus which are offered as an ‘argya’ to the Sun. Also, the Chhathi Maiya is worshipped.
Day 4: On the last day of Chhath puja again an arghya is offered to the Sun God but this time in the morning. The devotees go to the riverbank to offer arghya to the rising sun and break their fast and conclude their four-day long worship.

World Keratoconus Day:
Every year on November 10, World Keratoconus Day is celebrated to focus global attention on keratoconus and ectatic corneal disorders. The day was first celebrated by National Keratoconus Foundation.
Keratoconus is a disease that causes the cornea to become weak, leading to the thinning and stretching of the cornea, which may result in the loss of vision. Keratoconus is degeneration of the structure of the cornea. The shape of the cornea slowly changes from the normal round shape to a cone shape which affects the vision. The keratoconus mainly develops in teenagers and young adults and the disease keeps on growing, if not diagnosed in time.
The disease has no prevention and no treatment. With early diagnosis, the disease can be managed and further damage can be protected. In Nepal, the prevalence of Keratoconus is 1 in 2000 according to the recent journal. So, this world keratoconus day, make a commitment to visit an eye doctor once a year for the early diagnosis of keratoconus as well as other eye diseases.

Accumulation is a figure of speech, in which the points made previously are presented again in a compact, forceful manner. It often employs the use of climax in the summation of a speech.

A figure of speech wherein a sentence is deliberately broken off and left unfinished, the ending to be supplied by the imagination, giving an impression of unwillingness or inability to continue.

- And she left with. I don’t even want to share.
Apposition is a grammatical construction in which two elements, normally noun phrases, are placed side by side and so one element identifies the other in a different way.
- Nepal, my home, is where I want to die.
- My brother, Mr. Suresh, is joining me.
- Mr. Oli, a famous politician, is giving a speech.

ASTEISMUS (not needed but know it anyway)
